A financial establishment that helps individuals, companies and governments in raising money (also known as finance or capital) by endorsing or acting as the customer's mediator in the issuance of securities is known as an investment bank. Such a bank may also support companies involved in mergers and acquisitions and deliver auxiliary facilities such as trading of equity securities and derivatives, market making, and Fixed Income instruments, Currencies and Commodities services. In sharp contrast to retail banks and commercial banks, investment banks do not accept deposits.
The two chief lines of commerce in investment banking are
called the buy side and the sell side. The "buy side" includes the
facility of guidance to organizations concerned with buying and acquiring
investment services. Mutual funds, Private equity funds, unit trusts, life
insurance companies and hedge funds are the most common sorts of buy side objects.
The "sell side" includes trading securities for money or for other
securities (e.g. market-making, facilitating transactions), or the promotion of
securities (e.g. research, underwriting etc.).

private functions with an information blockade which splits the two to avoid
information from crossing. The public areas such as analysis of stocks deal
with public information while the bank’s private areas deal with private
information that are known to only the insiders that may not be publicly
disclosed.
